Belize – this Caribbean paradise is a viable home-ownership alternative.

Bordered by Mexico and Guatemala on the west and the shores of the Gulf of Mexico on the east, sits the English speaking country of Belize.  This unique caribbean country is only 176 miles long, 88 miles at its widest point, and includes 266 miles of offshore islands.

In addition to being a tax haven, this Western Caribbean paradise has a “qualified retiree program” for residents over 45 years of age to enjoy living in Belize with certain financial benefits.

Easily accessible with direct two hour flights from Miami, and on central time, Belize makes for an incredible vacation, second home or investment location.

Belize gained independence from Britain in 1981, but became a self-governing territory under the name of British Honduras in 1964. The government of Belize is a parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as sovereign.

Ambergris Caye is the place to get away in Belize, and San Pedro is the largest town in Ambergris Caye.  The real estate values had a slight drop during the bubble burst of the  United States, but property sales and coastal residential development is brisk since it is a popular retirement destination for baby boomers.

Though Belize has its own currency, the American dollar is accepted in most establishments.  Two Belizean dollars are equal to one American dollar and the rate of exchange is fixed for 25 years.

What is there to do in Belize? Snorkeling the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world; diving; fishing; boating; lying in the sun; and enjoying the 46% of Belize that is dedicated to national parks and marine reserve for eco-tourism.
